Few artists are more emblematic of Memphis’ rich Americana scene than Amy Lavere, the upright bass-playing singer-songwriter who has been a cornerstone of the local music scene for years. Armed with her striking blend of girlish charm and deeply mature lyricism, Lavere’s music is a reflection of her adventurous personal life and multifarious influences. A native of Louisiana, Lavere lived a nomadic life for much of her younger years, traveling around the United States and soaking up the regional sounds of Texas, Detroit, and Nashville before settling in Memphis. Although Lavere is best known as a solo performer, she has also worked alongside fellow local stalwarts such as Jim and Luther Dickinson, Jimbo Mathus, John Paul Keith, and her husband Will Sexton on various projects. Lavere’s most recent album, 2020’s Painting Blue, features some of the best songs of her career and was hailed as “audio medicine for our difficult times.”
