About This Event
Experience Steven Spielberg’s majestic sci-fi masterpiece, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, at the Martinsville Entertainment Theatre. Bringing this legendary tale of cosmic wonder to 36 E Morgan St turns a classic cinematic journey into a unique, shared community event. This screening gives local moviegoers the perfect opportunity to experience one of cinema’s greatest first-contact stories in a historic, hometown venue.
Roy, an Indiana electrical lineman, has a close encounter when a UFO hovers over his truck, leaving him with a facial "sunburn" and Haywire instruments. He becomes obsessed with a specific mountain-like shape, creating models of it out of mashed potatoes and mud, leading him on a desperate journey to Wyoming, which eventually leads to his family leaving him. There, he joins a secret government project attempting to communicate with extraterrestrials through a legendary five-note musical sequence.
In another storyline, Jillian (Melinda Dillon) witnesses UFOs over her home. During a terrifying manifestation, her three-year-old son, Barry, is abducted by the craft. Like Roy, she is haunted by the same mysterious mountain shape.
From the blazing neon lights of the alien spacecraft to John Williams’ iconic five-tone synth melody, the MET’s sound and big screen breathe new life into Douglas Trumbull's classic practical effects.
